Look for Seasonal Sales - Fuel prices have been on the declind and the holiday demand is obviously over so there are many airlines offering lower prices. Try to find a major discount carrier that is offering a sale or at least running some sort of special that you can take advantage of. You could do advance purchase tickets which usually save a lot of money. I think that in general the fares will be lower this year than we saw last year. Don't hold out for lower prices though, if the price fits your range, book it now.
Watch those extra fees - When you find the real cheap fares, be sure to look out for the hidden fees that make it more than a less "discount" ticket. Checked bags are the big ones. Some airlines charge a huge fee for checked bags. Make sure you are not paying this fee on top of your ticket, when you could pay a little more for a ticket and not pay the large baggage fee. Best bet is to carry on and avoid these fees all together, but that isn't always possible.
Become a member of airline websites - Many airlines have a mailing list where they will send you the deals that they have available. You can be the first to know when an airline is having a special and that is the best time to book, before anybody else.
Find Destinations that aren't as High Demand - Sometimes if you just fly into an airport and drive a little ways you may be able to save some money. One instance I have done with this before is I flew into Sanford Florida as opposed to Orlando. It is only about a 30 minute drive to Orlando at it was about 200 dollars cheaper than flying into Orlando International.
If you can't save on your flight save on your hotel - If you are booking a hotel, look for a good deal on that if you can save on the flight. Right now hotels are really lowering rates compared to previous years. As a matter of fact there has been about a 7% decline in hotel prices over the past year. This is the first time this has happened in at least 5 years.
I always post about good travel deals. There is always some fancy way to save on your travels. Keep your eyes open for future articles on how to save some dough.
