This can be difficult depending on your work. Instead of getting locked into a rigid vacation schedule you can ask your boss if you can be flexible with your vacation time. You will need to bring this up far in advance to when you are interested in taking vacation.
This flexibility should also apply for the day you want to fly. There are off days in which airfare will be much less expensive then by flying on a Friday or Sunday. The cheapest days to fly include Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The time of your departure and arrival can also affect the price as red eyes that leave late at night and arrive early in the morning are the least expensive flights. Departing in the middle of the day is also fairly cheap with departures first thing in the morning and late afternoon or early evening being the most expensive.
It is also possible to find the cheapest flights by flying and arriving in large airport hubs. You may need to drive farther to get to the hub but even with including the price of gas you will save considerably on ticket prices.
However you do need to make comparisons as flying from some large hubs can be more expensive then flying from smaller towns, it depends on the area.
Also taking advantage of off season fares and travel can greatly decrease your airfare cost. During off season the demand for travel to that specific destination is less so airports will have difficulty filling the plane. This leads to a decrease in airfare prices.
There are easy ways to get the greatest deals - book late as many airlines are just trying to fill their planes, especially in a sluggish economy that has decreased the number of trips taken.
