Building An Authoritative Travel Blog

Authoritative blogs seem all the rage at the moment but what exactly is an " Authoritative Travel Blog ?" Well my understanding of the matter is it is a blog that is not only very informative to the readers but that the information comes from authoritative type people in connection with what they are writing about.

Hopefully my articles below will give an insight on travel and travel related experiences from all over the world from many authoritative writers as they have been there and done that.

Articles will be and are published often and this means current travel experiences and up to date places to visit. If you have also visited these places or wish to comment then please do so remembering this blog is intended to family orientated visitors so please be respectful.

I have seen many fears raised through my article site and feel that any traveller today that, for one reason or another, decides against travel insurance then they are possibly being a little short sighted. We do not want our boats to sink but are happy to carry life rafts. travel insurance is a similar idea. We do not wish to ever claim on it but if things go wrong as they sometimes do it is a benifit to have the insurance.

The Various Cruise Lines: A Guide

By Donny McKinnon

Cruise Lines know what you want to have today when it comes to choosing a company and an itinerary. The European style of cruising is being different from the American style and knowing what you want is important to the companies. They see the growing trends are making many changes.

European cruise lines still offer that luxurious style of travel. The days of traveling first class from Europe to America was rich in traditions. The trend to move and design their ships to be more like the American cruise line ships is evident. American ships with their state of the art technology and something for every member of your family say a lot in today's world.

There are at least a dozen or more popular cruise lines for you to choose from. The American ships offer a less expensive package while delivering excellence in service and food and entertainment. This could make them very popular for today's traveler who wants to kick back and enjoy less formal times than the European counterpart.

American travelers or those traveling on those ships are less likely to be concerned over the lack of amenities in their cabins and more apt to upgrade. You can travel and be very satisfied if you can travel for a good price. Many European travelers are beginning to feel the same.

The cruise lines all have one thing in common, and that is to provide a luxurious way for you to enjoy a vacation. The number one cruise lines influences all the others and are even bringing their standards to a new level. Luxury and casual elegance and styling are the new mode.

You may have youngsters to take on a cruise with you. Your ship then has to provide some accommodations and activities to help them enjoy the vacation. If you are using your vacation as a little getaway, then you will have to decide which is better. Will you go with a cruise line who pampers the kids, or will you leave them at home. That may be a difficult decision to make.

Society has changed from the days of formal traveling with the children across the Atlantic Ocean. Children need the structure of play and supervised activities. Cruise lines that have taken those things into consideration help you to book your cruise as a family travel. Children are welcome today by lots of cruise line. Just look for the one that provides the most.

Many companies go to the same ports, but which one will offer you what you need and want and cruise the extra mile to ensure your holiday is one never to forget! Service, service, service is very important and then more service. This is your vacation and the cruise line who offers you the most value for your dollar are most likely the cruise line who you will be booking with. The cruise companies are relying on their reputation, so look them over. Ask friends what line they like. After all, it is a popularity contest. Enjoy your cruise.

Honeymooning in Costa Rica

By Arthur P. Maxwell

For many years now Costa Rica as a luxury beach vacation spot has been on the rise. Well, now it's making the top of the list for honeymoon destinations. With amazing beaches on both coasts, in addition to the mountainous cloud forests, Costa Rica is becoming a honeymooner's paradise.

Beaches are on both coasts in Costa Rica, the Caribbean side and the Pacific side. Each offers you its own flavor depending on your desires. Manuel Antonio is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Not only do you find lush, pristine beaches, but the beaches are surrounded by amazing rainforest. All within a short walk from each other.

Traveling around this small country is an experience in itself. Research is strongly suggested if you plan on going it alone. There are several internet sights available to assist you in putting together your honeymoon package, don't hesitate to contact them.

There are many adventuresome activities here in Costa Rica. If you are looking to kayak or raft down many of the incredible rivers, or try your hand at zip lining over the treetops of the rainforest, you can bet that this honeymoon vacation will be packed with adventure. But if it is peace and quiet on a beautiful beach with lush surroundings that's your goal, your choices are plentiful.

Manuel Antonio, Arenal or Monteverde are a few places that come to mind if you are looking for a special destination that will allow you your privacy. While these places do have their share of tourism, they are also loaded with secluded hotels for your solitary pleasure. However, if you choose to mingle with the crowds, that is also an option.

Amazing locations such as Tango Mar and Corcovado can be excitingly romantic. With such hotels as the Four Seasons and the Marriott, you can bet that luxury awaits you. If you want to be pampered, waited on and have the privacy of your own bungalow, here is where you can find it.

There are many things to consider when choosing your honeymoon package. Customizing honeymoon vacations with multiple destinations is tricky and best done with the help of a travel consultant. Having someone who knows the areas of interest or areas secluded from the regular tourist trap, can guarantee you an amazing honeymoon.

One of the things that can be very tricky in Costa Rica is transportation. While public transportation is efficient for Costa Rica standards, it is not for the rest of the world. There are private transports available and many shuttle companies, however, you are on their schedule. Flying is also another method of transport within the country that is highly recommended.

Whatever you decide about your honeymoon, remember that Costa Rica is a magical place that is meant to be enjoyed. You only get one honeymoon, hopefully, so be sure that you have all the information you can before booking your dream vacation. Paradise awaits you here in Costa Rica so come, enjoy and fall in love all over again.

Best Island Getaways In Australia

By Jennifer Schellington

If you are thinking of incorporating some well needed relaxation into your visit to Australia, then you should stay a while on one of its many islands.

Australia is blessed with thousands of km of beautiful coastline and over 8000 islands. Not every island is worth a visit but there are certainly enough to cater for all tastes, no matter how strange they might be.

Whether you need a classic tropical island getaway or fancy a wonderful walking trail, or need value for money or something that the kids will love, you will find it on one of Australia's Island Getaways.

The most famous and probably most well known are the Whitsundays. These are totally stunning and well worth the expensive trip. But perhaps very much on the tourist trail. This article will look at two islands which offer the traveller something completely different and are off the usual tourist trail. In fact, it's where the locals go.

Magnetic Island, Queensland

This island is in Queensland 12km off the coast of Townsville. It offers sublime beaches at a much more reasonable price than most of Queensland's other island getaways. This is especially true if you compare it to the cost of a holiday in the Whitsundays.

This is the place for you if you want to lounge on a beach, go swimming, snorkel or even do a bit of walking. Magnetic Island has its own National Park and you can't miss Mount Cook which protrudes from its centre. The bays are a plenty and very pretty with some lovely walks to enjoy. It's also popular with families as there are plenty of activities to keep the kids busy.

If you fancy some water sports action then there is plenty to choose from on Magnetic Island. Sailing around the secluded bays is a popular choice, as is sea kayaking. It is also an excellent place to learn to dive as it is relatively inexpensive compared to many areas and the marine life is excellent. For those wanting to stay dry, then why not have a go at horse-riding at Horseshoe Bay.

Another good thing about the island is that it is small enough to drive around in just half a day, but still big enough to offer good amenities including shops and reasonably priced accommodation.

It's easy to get around the island too. There's a local bus service or why not hire a bike. You can also hire a car but petrol on the island is a tad pricey. Lots choose to see the island on a moke which is a small car, a bit like a mini.

There's lots of beaches to choose from here but the nicest are probably Florence Bay and Balding Bay. Spend a day at Balding Bay sun bathing and snorkeling. Bring your own food and use the barbie facilities here. Horseshoe bay offers the longest of the island's beaches and is a good place to rent kayaks.

Hinchinbrook Island

If relaxing on the beach is not really your thing and you prefer a bit more adventure, then try Hinchinbrook Island. It is famous for the Thorsborne Track which is 32km of moderately demanding hiking. You'll see some beautiful waterfalls, mangroves and beaches.

You can hike the track in just two days but it's much better to take your time and stop off along the way providing you don't mind camping. The track runs from north to south but its better to finish in the north. It means at the end of the trek you can check in to the only accommodation on the island - Wilderness Lodge. It has a pool and a bar which you will need when you have finished the walk!

The entire walk is stunning but the highlights are probably Zoe Falls and the stretch between Ramsay Bay and Nina Bay which follows the coastline and takes you through rainforests.

If you'd rather not do the walk then you can just come and stay at the Wilderness Lodge. If however the walk sounds like fun, make sure you book well in advance. Numbers onto the island are restricted so the walk gets booked up very quickly.

Winter is the best time to visit this island, i.e Between June and October. Outside of this time, it is the wet season. It rains a lot, especially in February and March. So much so, they close down the ferry from the mainland over these two months.

For more Australian island getaways, you can visit the Real Australia Travel Website (see below) where you will find 15 islands to choose from. It also gives details on where to stay on Magnetic Island.

Forests, fields, meadows, lakes and creeks are replaced by inlets, sand dunes and the view to the sear, as you approach the coast. Whether you enjoy the lush green of the inland forests and woodlands, the rugged northern coastline or the balmy suns soaked beaches of the islands, a holiday in Denmark offers much variety.

Of all of Denmark's islands, the biggest is Zealand - the original, not the 'new' one! The capital, Copenhagen, is located on the eastern part of Zealand, not far from Sweden. If you prefer spending time in the big city, thriving on shopping experiences, galleries, museums and entertainment, then Copenhagen is a must. You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping, and for leisure and entertainment there's always plenty to enjoy. Of course, while you're by the coast, why not stop by and greet our little mermaid! Although Danish government is now democratic, it was only up until the mid 19th century that Denmark was ruled by kings, based in the city of Copenhagen.

The rule of the Kings of Denmark may have passed, but their legacy lives on, with monumental castles all across the country. If visiting Copenhagen, be sure to make time to visit the splendid Amalienborg Palace, which is where the current Queen lives today. The Danish crown jewels are exhibited at the nearby Rosenborg Palace, which is definitely also worth a visit during your holidays in Copenhagen.

Another of Denmark's islands well worth seeing is Bornholm, towards the eastern shores. What is particularly noticeable is Bornholm's landscape which is quite distinct compared to elsewhere in Denmark. The dramatic cliff faces and rock-strewn landscape is unique compared to the rest of the country. This is not to suggest that Bornholm's coastline is rocky and wild - because a great number of outstanding beaches are to be found around the south of the island. The island is a great choice for anyone who wants to spend their holidays in Denmark in one of the most popular destinations in the country. From north coast to south, from the wild landscape of Bornholm to the luxury of Copenhagen, a holiday in Denmark is guaranteed to be varied.

Mississippi Cruise Offers: Rural Or Urban?

By Anthony Herbert

Few holiday experiences can match the sheer delightfulness of living on a riverboat and slowly travelling down the waters, as time goes by. This is especially true in Mississippi cruises.

When deciding on a Mississippi cruise, you have a series of different alternatives. Besides the obvious ones, such as length and itinerary, you should also spare a thought to whether you want a historical or themed trip, and on if you prefer spending time in towns and cities, or in the unspoilt countryside.

A historical voyage on an old paddle boat can be a great experience, accompanied as it is by the showbiz entertainment of olden times. A historically-themed trip will take you to the prominent cities of the area, such as New Orleans, and will let you taste traditional cuisine, such as highbrow Louisiana Creole fare.

There are several paddleboats plying the Mississippi, but the most well-known ones for cruises are the Mississippi Queen, the delta Queen and the American Queen.

A themed cruise on the other hand is more oriented towards a specific subject, for example Big Band, Jazz, Civil War, and Cajun. Riverboat cruises offer very different experiences to passengers.

Alternatives are many - whether you want to explore the customs of the regions' Native American inhabitants, or learn some Bluegrass, you will not be disappointed.

Even the themed cruises, though, often have a link to the area's varied past. Often there will be a guide accompanying you and telling you about the local heritage.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's cruises are available for the whole family, and these are great ways to enjoy during the holidays with your loved ones while someone else cooks for you!

In a way, seasonal cruises can also be considered to be of the themed sort. Imagine for instance a cruise in autumn, with a plethora of different colours amongst the local forests, and a menu to match the landscape. Game, pumpkin, roasted vegetables and farm-brewed apple cider could be served on your cruse ship's restaurant.

Regardless of the season and of the theme that you will choose, you will find that there is something amongst the bends of the Mississippi that will feel just right for you. Alternatives abound!

Yet another option worth taking into think ofation when you're deliberating purchasing inflatable boats is a pontoon. There are distinct sizes that you can select from, from one person versions to much larger versions, so be sure to take into consideration the number of persons that you would like to take out fishing with you when you're pondering purchasing this type of inflatable boat. Careful arrangement now will permit you to have more enjoyment of your boat later on.

When purchasing inflatable boats its also required to take into consideration the area where you'll expend most of your time fishing. Always check with the manufacturer's guidelines to uncover whether the boat you're purchasing is fitfor the state s where you will be doing most of your fishing.

With all things taken into consideration, inflatable boats can be a good choice when you're low on budget but wish to start fishing right away. They may likewise be a good choice while you're saving up to purchase a larger boat.

Chicago's Pump Room Restaurant Jumping Once Again

By Ross Everett

The venerable Pump Room Restaurant in Chicago is once again a beacon of civilized living. Famously memorialized in the Frank Sinatra song 'Chicago', the 'jumping Pump Room' was one of the first true fine dining establishments to open in the Windy City at the end of Prohibition. Almost immediately, it became a favorite of celebrities including the biggest stars in entertainment history--Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr, Jackie Gleason, Dean Martin, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Ronald Reagan and Marilyn Monroe is just a very small list of the icons that made it a regular hangout. In the later part of the 20th century, however, it sort of fell off the map as a new wave of gourmet restaurants in the Windy City led by Charlie Trotter reduced it to a historical footnote.

The Pump Room opened in 1938 under the ownership and management of Ernie Blyfield. He took the name from an 18th century London pub favored by celebrities and nobility, including Queen Anne. The original pub got its name from the hot drinks pumped into the cocktails of its stylish clientele.

Blyfied's Chicago Pump Room took off immediately, and its most sought after table--'Booth 1' may have been the most desired spot of any dining establishment in the country for a time. Booth 1 was occupied by Sinatra and cronies like Jilly Rizzo, Judy Garland and daughter Liza Minnelli, Clark Gable, John Barrymore as well as Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

Blyfield died in 1950, but the Pump Room remained a Chicago hot spot and hosted a new era of superstars including Mel Brooks, Beverly Sills, Paul Newman, Robert Redford. More recently, Michael J. Fox, Eddie Murphy and Mick Jagger have made appearances. A funny story involves former Genesis drummer Phil Collins, who was refused entry for not wearing a jacket. The incident was commemorated in the title of his next solo album No Jacket Required which has since sold over 14 million copies worldwide and launched Collins into solo superstardom. Following its release, the Pump Room sent Collins an apology"and an appropriate jacket so that the incident wouldnt be repeated.

Since being purchased by the Dallas Restaurant Group in the late 1990s, things are hopping again, however. With the extremely talented chef Martial Noguier at the helm (who has worked in the kitchen of a number of Frances most renown chefs), and a $2 million dollar restoration of the facilities, the Pump Room is back among the rarefied heights of Chicagos best restaurants. Though the flaming food served on a sword that was the Pump Room trademark during its golden era is sadly absent (due to city fire codes), the menu is now up to snuff serving Noguiers sophisticated interpretation of classic American cuisine. In addition to the revamped cuisine, the Pump Room upgraded its wine offering and expanded the bar area.

The Pump Rooms stature has been maintained by current executive chef Nick Sutton. The star of the place, however, is still the almost palpable sense of history that the dining room offers. Considering that the giants of civilized culture"from Bogey all the way to the Chairman himself"have held court in that room, it is a pretty intoxicating aura. Fortunately, the Pump Room is once again worthy of such legends, and its renaissance is a victory for culinary civility in a world too often overwhelmed with Olive Gardens and Red Lobsters.

How To Have A Great Seadoo Camping Weekend

By Josh Brodderick

I must have the best summer weekend schedule of anyone I know. Well, except for my buddies who have pretty much the same weekend schedule that I do. I spend the entire week preparing for Friday evening, where I will pack up the truck, tighten down my seadoo cover, hitch up the seadoo trailer, and head out on my 2 hour drive up to the summer campsite destination. I have a small set of friends that share the same passion for seadoo riding and camping that I do, so every year I look forward to a summer of good times relaxation at the lake.

Almost every weekend during the months of July and August I spend the weekend camping, fishing and riding my Seadoo PWC. In my opinion, it's a pretty perfect weekend getaway. I have managed to convince a few of my friends to spend most of their weekends this way as well. I have been spending my summers this way for the past 3 years. As each year passes another friend buys a Seadoo and gets to experience this joyous way of life.

The campground that me and my buddies have chosen as this years permanent weekend spot is about a 2 hour drive away. That means that I can finish up work a half hour early on Friday, and barring any cottager traffic jams I make it up to the site in time to setup the tent and put the seadoo into the lake in time for a quick spin. This still gives us time to get supper started before dark. If we start the campfire at the same time, the timing works out so we always eat our first meal of the weekend by campfire light.

Bright and early Saturday morning is my favorite part of the whole weekend. I make a quick pot of coffee, have a little snack, and grab my travel mug and fire up the seadoo. My favorite alteration to my seadoo has to be the bolt on coffee holder that I use for my super slow, check out the lake rides on Saturday morning. I get to see what's been going on during the weekdays I'm not here, and sometimes if I get out early enough I turn off the engine and just float for a while enjoying the morning quiet out on the middle of the lake. After an hour or so I head back, and help make a huge camping breakfast, and really start the whole camping weekend.

After breakfast, we head back to the water again for some fast paced Seadoo PWC fun. We conduct various informal match races and doughnut spinning contests and other silly games. At one point we played a form of Seadoo rugby. Throughout our friendly competitions we are always careful and take measures to be safe.

Sunday afternoons always seem to arrive by surprise and fair too early. Generally by 4pm, I have had my final Seadoo ride and I'm beginning to tear down the camp site. Any fish that hasn't been consumed is divvied up amongst the group and packed in ice for the trip home. With sadness we put our Seadoo covers on our Seadoo PWCs and make our way back to city.

Mississippi Cruise Offers: Rural Or Urban?

By Anthony Herbert

River cruises are some of the most pleasurable ways to travel, and a Mississippi cruise is no exception.

You have several options when it comes to taking a high-end Mississippi cruise: You can travel on a historical steamboat, or take a themed cruise. You can mainly spend time visiting towns and cities, or enjoy a more rural and secluded trip on one of the famous boats plying the river.

A paddle-wheel steamboat is certainly the best way to cruise and at the same time explore the history of the Mississippi River. You get to see the "showboat" amusements of the past. You will visit cities such as New Orleans, Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis, and visit sights such as the latter's Gateway Arch. You will taste excellent Cajun food on board.

There are several paddleboats plying the Mississippi, but the most well-known ones for cruises are the Mississippi Queen, the delta Queen and the American Queen.

Other themed cruises may still have a historical facet, but are more specific. For instance, they could be about the area's musical heritage, or about civil War sites

You can participate in bluegrass celebrations. You can experience the region's Native American culture. Battle sites from the Civil War abound on Mississippi cruises.

Several cruises are narrated, providing informative history accounts and bringing the Mississippi of olden times to life. Most themes are linked to the region's traditions and glorious past.

Also, don't forget to take the season of your trip into account. Some seasons are better suited for families or couples; others are more appealing to groups of friends, or to those inclining to solitary pursuits.

A voyage in spring, with flowers in bloom and a great variety of fresh fish and fruit on the cruise ship's menu, will feel very different than a trip in another season. Springtime is a great moment to visit the Mississippi with a loving someone, but also with a group of friends.

Regardless of the season and of the theme that you will choose, you will find that there is something amongst the bends of the Mississippi that will feel just right for you. Alternatives abound!

Rhode Island USA

By Jane Kieseker

Everyone knows that Rhode Island, actually the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is the smallest state in the USA. But not everyone knows that the state and island that gives it a colloquially abbreviated name are not one and the same.

Indeed, the Rhode Island part of the longest state name in America is unofficially called Aquidneck Island to distinguish from the state as a whole.

Now that's cleared up, what of Rhode Island? It is the largest of several in Narragansett Bay, with its southern shore facing the Atlantic Ocean. The area of this well developed island is 117 sq km (45 sq ml) and it is connected to the mainland by three bridges.

The Newport Bridge terminates at Jamestown on nearby Conanicut Island, and then on to the mainland on the western side of the bay. The Mount Hope Bridge in Portsmouth connects the northern side of the island with Bristol. The same area is served by the Sakonnet River Bridge over a narrow saltwater channel to Tiverton. The nearby Stone Bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Carol in 1954. The island is divided into three municipalities: Newport, Middleton and Portsmouth.

The island's population shrank by a fifth in the 10 years after the US Navy reorganized its major base at Newport in 1973, but is growing again, with over half its area now built over as housing demand increases. But wetland and woodland still occupy a third of the island and there is an active preservation society trying to keep it that way.

After the navy base, the island's principal revenue generator is tourism. Narragansett Bay is a magnet for visitors and they come to Rhode Island principally for the beaches and coastline, enjoying related water activities like sailing, kayaking, sailboarding, diving and fishing.

A Mississippi Cruise To Relax And Unwind

By Anthony Herbert

If you feel like airfare to the embarkation port is impeding you to go on a Mississippi cruise, consider leaving from the Gulf of Mexico. The two main Gulf Coast cities are now increasingly offering cruise departures up the Mississippi. Galveston and New Orleans are not only close and Mississippi cruise vacationers; these are great but lesser-known American cities worth a visit in their own right.

Galveston, about an hour's by car from Houston, is a great starting point for a Mississippi cruise if you are coming from the East. It is a historical area since it was already a very large, bustling commercial city in the 19th century. In fact the city was the Ellis Island of the Gulf, and many immigrants (especially of German origin) landed in Galveston.

Before leaving on your Mississippi cruise you may want to stop in the city for a couple of days, as interesting sights abound. There are several close and lovely beaches for sunbathing and swimming, for instance, as well as some lovely landscaped gardens in the city proper.

Another, somewhat more common alternative, is to begin your Mississippi cruise in New Orleans. Don't let the threat of hurricanes put you off, in season this is a fantastic place to explore.

In fact, the Mississippi cruise business is important for the city and those who want to help New Orleans get back on her feet can't do better than by leaving for a Mississippi cruise from her port, after having spent a couple of days in the city.

The French Quarter is the most famous area, and it's where most sights are, where the best restaurants congregate, and where you will spend most of your time. It's also the best place to buy some necessities for your Mississippi cruise.

You certainly won't go hungry in New Orleans, as there are tons of options, from the humble muffaletta, a sandwich with olives, to a ritzy supper with oysters and seafood. And you will probably encounter both these local staples again, on that upriver Mississippi cruise.

As for local specialties, Creole and Cajun cuisines are the staple in New Orleans and also common on a Mississippi cruise. You'll notice that they are pretty different approaches to food. Creole food is Europeanized in taste, and uses lots of wine, butter, thick sauces, enjoy pastries and is the backbone of local fancy dining.

Cajun cuisine is more hearty and rural, with lots of hot food, and includes whatever animal that you can get without it eating you first! You can get alligator, and in fact you will see it on a lot of menus. Try these in the city, as not all Mississippi cruises will have them on their menu.

Concerning your safety, make sure to bring a hat and sunscreen if you are leaving for your cruise in the summer and be especially vigilant for pickpockets in the town centers. You can relax your guard once you have boarded your Mississippi cruise.

The Beginnings: Costa Rica Eco Tourism, Teddy Roosevelt And The Matterhorn

By Victor C. Krumm

It began with Teddy Roosevelt and started at the Matterhorn. Today we call it eco tourism and what started as the germ of an idea on a cold, forlorn Swiss mountain now leads thousands of people each year to a tiny gem that Christopher Columbus named "Costa Rica" over 500 years ago.

A couple of decades before he became one of America's greatest presidents, Roosevelt, ever the adventurer, traveled to Europe to climb the famous Matterhorn Mountain in Switzerland. He was amazed by what he encountered on the mountain or, more accurately, what was missing.

The mountain was virtually barren. Where once there had been wilderness there were no longer goats, mountain sheep, bears, wolves, or other great animals.

Though the phrase "eco tourism" was nearly 100 years away from being coined, Theodore Roosevelt was the world's first eco tourist and in a very real way, he is the father of eco tourism.

What do Roosevelt and the Matterhorn have to do with Costa Rica eco tourism? More than you might think. The Matterhorn brought home to him the necessity to set aside vast tracts of land to preserve life and, when he became President, he took on the robber barons and vested interests to set aside 230 million acres as wilderness and parks: an extraordinary achievement for America and singular achievement for the world.

Roosevelt's bold accomplishment led to an extraordinary discovery: common citizens would gladly pay money to experience nature. Sustained use of land through eco tourism had important economic consequences, perhaps more valuable than exploitation in many cases---in America.

But, in Costa Rica? This was a place that in 1519 its Spanish Governor described "the poorest and most miserable Spanish colony in all Americas." Almost 450 years later, its forests had been largely devastated for farm land and it was primarily dependent upon the export of bananas, coffee, and other agricultural products for its economic well-being. It appeared destined for economic obscurity, particularly when the world coffee market crashed in the early 1970s.

With challenge comes opportunity for the bold and thoughtful and, in an apparently unlikely alliance, conservationists and business interests argued in favor of setting aside resources for sustainable, rather than exploitative, development. For whatever reason, the government agreed to this rather bold experiment and, in just three decades, has now set aside nearly 25% of the country for parks and preserves. Roosevelt, ever the visionary, would applaud if still here.

In the span of just 30 years, the results have been spectacular. While most countries were burning and cutting their forests, Costa Rica was reforesting. Today, there are 20% more forests than just 25 years ago. Birds and mammals are returning to places where they haven't been seen for a generation or more. Costa Rica has enthusiastically embraced sustained development, rejecting the siren's call of Big Oil by refusing off shore drilling for oil. Indeed almost 100% of its electricity now comes from renewable, non-polluting hydro-electric power and it is embarking on wind turbines for additional generation. Researchers from Columbia and Yale researchers now put it in the top 5 of all environmentally sensitive countries in the world.

Costa Rica tourism and eco tourism have soared and the country has vaulted into the #1 position on the Happiest Place in the World Index. Turns out that Columbus was prescient when he named this place "the rich coast" or "Costa Rica" and the Spanish governor who called it as "the poorest and most miserable Spanish colony in Americas" was dead wrong. Somewhere, Roosevelt smiles in triumph.

Finally, I want to end with the Swiss Matterhorn, the place behind Roosevelt's sudden clarity that parks and preserves were essential to saving wildlife and Costa Rica's courageous extension of that idea leading to today's incredibly successful Costa Rica eco tourism. Costa Rica is sometimes called the "Switzerland" of the tropics but Switzerland can learn from Costa Rica---not the other way around---that life-filled mountains (Costa Rica) are eminently more valuable than lifeless mountains (Switzerland). And it is possible to reverse fortunes with a change of attitude.

Brazil's Florianopolis Island

By Roger Stone

Florianopolis, the capital city of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, is located on the gorgeous island of Santa Catarina, which is itself widely referred to as Florianopolis.

This throbbing city has the highest standard of living of any in Brazil, and the inhabitants know how to enjoy themselves.

The island is famous for its long stretches of sugar-soft sandy beaches, outstanding seafood and traditional Azorean hospitality. The tropical climate, exotic landscapes and lay back lifestyle make the island a firm favourite with holidaying Brazilians, but it is also becoming more and more popular with the international crowd.

The majority the population lives on the northern end of the island. Although originally settled by the Portuguese who came from the Azores, the city has strong German and Italian influences.

In the peak tourist season, from December to February, the population of the city trebles and the beaches closest to the city centre, Canasvieiras, Jurure and Praia dos Ingleses, are packed with tanning bodies. But there are plenty of other attractions not far away.

To the east the lush green hills give way to the wide, sandy beaches of Galheta, Mole and Joaquina. Here the big, exciting waves attract surfers looking for that perfect ride. In the south-east of the island looking out into the Atlantic are the rugged, deserted beaches of Campeche, Armacao, Lagoinha do Leste and Naufragios, which can only be reached by track.

Ribeirao da Ilha, on the west side of the island, bears testament to Azorean immigration. The beautifully kept Azorean and Portuguese fishing villages boast colourful architecture and friendly locals. The historic centre, in Frequesia, has a beautiful plaza with the Igreja Nossa Senhora, da Lapa do Ribeirao church, and an interesting Ethnological Museum. The area is accessible only via a narrow, winding and picturesque seaside track offering scenic vistas of Baia Sul and the lush hills of the mainland across the water body.

The Lagoa da Conceicao is a famous natural attraction in the centre of the island. The large lagoon is partially surrounded by sand dunes and its shallow waters and high winds make it perfect for wind-surfing. Here are also some of the best eating places and nightlife on the island.
